Instagram intends to take a step foward in the data portability direction, making users data available for download.

The giant social media network is building its own data portability tool which will allow users to download a copy of everything that they have shared on the Instagram platform. This is a step forward, as it lets users have right of access to all their data that’s on the platform. This also helps Facebook, which owns Instagram, to comply with the GDPR.

It’s great to see that this tool will not only be available for European users, but it will be available in the U.S., even though data portability isn’t an established right in U.S. law.
