Our digital world constantly moves forward, and with those growing changes our data portability rights do as well.

In the last couple of weeks Facebook has been facing some harsh judgement due to Cambridge Analytics fallout. New security measures will come into effect very soon. But there is a little known fact: Facebook users have always been able to delete and download their entire history of posts, contacts and other related content into a zip file. The issue is, it was not very easy to do, and it’s not until now that Facebook is putting effort into marketing those capabilities.

In the article by GlobalData Technology they add this:Back in 2010, Facebook first started talking about a ‘Download Your Information’ feature that provided just that, and there are dozens of third-party apps and portals out there that are able to perform that same task.Even the regulators have caught up. From next month – in the EU, at least – new regulation will force all networks to provide users with simple, easy-to-follow tools and instructions to do just that.

Even though Facebook has always had this option available to users, not all companies do. It is important to have access to our own data. It’s unfortunate it was spotlighted with such a negative connotation in Facebook’s case.
